Basically this means that a species is near extinction (non-existence). One of the ways to be officially classified as an endangered species, the species’ habitat has to be reduced and the range in which it can hunt and breed restricted. If the species is being over-used for commercial, recreational or scientific purposes, it can also be cause for classification as an endangered species.

Simply stated, if there are natural or man-made factors affecting a species’ survival, it will be classified as endangered.
