What does it mean that Spanish moss is not “true” moss?

Spanish moss is not a true moss because it does not rely on its host for nutrients.  It is an epipyhtic plant (meaning it lives on a surface non-parasitically), it makes its own food.  It is often referred to as the air plant because they have aerial roots.  It latches onto trees by using stems to wrap around the tree.
