What does gasoline break down into when its burned in your car?

If it was burned or combusted completely gasoline, a hydrocarbon liquid, would produce CO2 and water. Unfortunately, in cars this is not the case. Due to the lack of time and oxygen for the combustion in the engine, carbon monoxide is formed as well as nitrogen oxides from the nitrogen present in the air. Lastly, some of the hydrocarbons themselves escape unburned in the form of volitile organic compounds (VOC) which together with the nitrogen oxides and a good dose of sun light produce smog.
