What does the flaring process for natural gas do?

A gas flare is a elevated vertical pipe that used for combusting waste gas released by pressure relief valves and for releasing the excess amount of natural gas that cannot be used.  Flaring is when a gas flare burns this excess gas and the carbon dioxide formed is released into the atmosphere.

Flaring has been a major environmental concern because of the generated and CO2 emissions given off.  A Brazilion oil company, Petrolbras is developing technology to utilize the natural gas given off by flaring through technology developed by Compact GTL and Velocys, which would convert the gas into liquid form for later use as fuel.
