“Fins to the left, fins to the right” comes from a 1979 song called “Fins” by Jimmy Buffett. The fins in the song belong to the “sharks”, or men, that crowd around women at bars. The song’s protagonist is an independent woman trying to escape the advances of these “sharks” as she travels around on her own.
The phrase is now frequently appropriated for use as a title for articles about surfing or surf equipment, shark fin soup, etc.
