Detritus is non-living particulate organic matter. Often time this organic matter is broken down from once living things by micro-organisms. An example of detritus is the organic remains of a leaf.
Detritus usually refers to loose fragments that have been worn away from stones, rocks and silt. It can also at times refer to matter and debris from decaying or disentegrating organisms. The word comes from the Latin detritus which means rubbing away.
