Dentists have environmental impacts like other businesses. Their business office uses energy to power lights and appliances, which is often derived from the dirty fuel coal. Burning coal emits carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming. CO2 emissions are also associated with the tools dentists use – producing the chairs, small metal hand tools, and other things. Additionally, patients and employees who commute to the office usually ride in cars or buses, which are fueled by oil which also emits CO2. Don’t let this deter you from going to the dentist, though – clean teeth are very important, and virtually every human business has similar environmental impacts.
