Carbon does not simply convert into something else when it reaches the atmosphere, which is why there is a danger of it building up in the atmosphere if it is continued to be released by burning fossil fuels. Carbon can be absorbed by differenty types of carbon sinks: water, trees and other vegetation, the biosphere, and the lithosphere. Carbon is exchanged throughout the different “-speres” by processes, which are geological and biological in nature.
