Ayurvedic is a term that refers to the practice of traditional medicine in India. The word is derived from sanskrit and means knowledge of life. Herbal medicine, massage, and yoga are all considered types of Ayurvedic medicine. It is similar to what westerners consider “alternative medicine”. Yoga is probably the most well known ayurvedic practice and was made even more popular by Elizabeth Gilbert’s New York Times Best Selling book “Eat, Pray, Love” in which she goes to India to practice ayurvedic yoga.
Ayurveda is holistic medicine system from India. It is derived from ancient texts and has been around for over six thousand years. The philosophy behind ayurveda and ayurvedic medicine is that the individual is composed of five different elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. All of these elements are present in the individual body and in order to cure and adjust physical ailments, each of these elements must be addressed and balanced.
