    The American Petroleum Institute (API) is a trade association that brings together companies in the industry on oil production, refining, pipeline operators and marine transporters. API represents this industry to congress and the public. They also conduct research related to the field, develop standards for the industry and certify companies to these standards, and provide education on the industry to the public.
