The only reason I can come up with here is good old fashioned ignorance. Perhaps they think that since a petroglyph is graffiti, they can add to it with their own. Or perhaps they just want to make their mark in life. Either way, it is horribly destructive, and it’s sad to say, I think we need some way of protecting them from humankind.
People can also be driven to do things because those things are expressly forbidden or taboo. Sometimes when you try to discipline children, they won’t listen no matter what you say because they only want to do the opposite of what you tell them. It’s the same idea behind these more serious offenses–because most people wouldn’t want to vandalize the rocks, they think it would be fun to do something that others wouldn’t.
