For me Wangari Maathai was the most influential Nobel Prize winner for the environment. Maathai started a pan-Africa movement to plant trees, called the “Green Belt Movement”. She educated rural people, especially women, to plant trees in order to protect their native environments and ensure resources for the future. This is one of the greatest examples of how grassroots environmental movements can have profound effects.
