This is a tricky situation because three-quarters of the emissions came from developing countries. Considering other developed countries have been the largest polluters in the past, who are they to tell developed countries that they too cannot expand economically?
Also, developed countries are no angels themselves, they still contribute a good portion of emissions to the 30.6 gigatonnes, especially when you consider the small percentage of the world population they represent.
The fact that the world produced this much pollution in the middle of a recession should be a signal that world consumption patterns need to change. More money must be invested into retrofitting the world’s energy sector, in developing and developed countries alike.
