What do you have to do to water to make it distilled?

Distilled water can be made at home, by means of a very old and well understood process.  First, it must be understood that when water boils, it moves from the liquid phase to the gas phase.  If whatever needs to be removed from the water moves to the gaseous phase at a higher temperature than water does, then the water will be pure in the gaseous phase.  The water vapor is then cooled, and converted back into a liquid.  Whatever is left is considered pure, distilled water.  For a more specific breakdown of the process, follow the link below.
