At the scrap yard, flattened automobiles are separated into three categories: iron and steel, nonferrous metal, and non-metallic scrap. The iron and steel are highly recyclable and are separated from the rest magnetically. The iron and steel is then shipped to steel mills where it is recycled to produce new steel. There are two different ways of producing steel from recycled material (hte basic oxygen furnace and the electric arc furnace, both of which have specific purposes for refurbishing the recycled material.
