The general goal of implementing a smart grid is to increase the efficiency and reliability of energy delivery to consumers. A smart grid is controlled by a constant feed of digital data coming from all different regions and levels of the system. Thus, the amount of energy supplied to any one area can be carefully tailored to its energy demand. This strategy is implemented throughout all levels of the grid from large-scale transmission to small-scale distribution so that the system as a whole delivers energy intelligently to all areas. In simple terms, areas that need power get precisely how much they need, when they need it.
