The most direct way to turn biomass into energy is by combustion. This is usually burned with coal in a process called co-firing. Non-combustion methods include thermochemical, biochemical, and chemical. Thermochemical extracts gases, liquids, and solids from broken down animal and plant matter. These extracts can then serve as energy sources. Biochemical utilizes bacteria, yeasts, and enzymes to break down the carbohydrates in biomass to extract different sources. Chemical methods involve turning natural oils into fuel similar to diesel.
