With our current technology, we don’t have an effective way of getting rid of nuclear waste. The only technology we really have right now is to either bury old waste, which will hopefully lose its radioactivity in a couple of hundred years, or to place old fuel rods in pools of boric acid to absorb some of its radioactivity. None of these ways are truly disposal, as we still do not have a permanent way to get rid of nuclear waste.
France reduces its waste volume significantly by recycling (reprocessing) first-level waste, which is not done in the US. Nonetheless, they still have a lot to deal with, and according to Greenpeace a lot is shipped to Russia for disposal in already-contaminated sites.
