Generally, nothing. The wells are “plugged and abandoned” according to normal practices. There may be required environmental cleanup of stuff on the surface. In a few cases underground wells could be used for storage of surplus natural gas, refined products, etc., but in general a fully abandoned well would not be used in that way, I think.
