The same things other plants need to live, sunlight and water. The leaves of air plants (also known as epiphytes) perform normal photosynthesis. While air-plants do not have roots, they are able to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. In addition, many air-plants derive nutrients from the host-plant or host-object through a siphon-like appendage called the haustrum.
