Thick curtains can help save energy in two ways. When it is cold in your home and the heater is on, cutains, depending on the material from which they are made, can act as an insulator, keeping the heat in the desired area and not letting it disperse out through the window. This allows your heating system to not have to work as hard because they warm air continues to keep the room heated instead of being let out. Conversely, in the summer, it helps to keep the direct sunlight out of the indoor space, keeping rooms cooler and also allowing your AC to not work as hard because it don’t let the cool air out.
Thick curtains provide insulation (especially older winters) to block out cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer. It also saves money when it comes to the utilities.
