Water treatment isn’t as much about putting things into the water as taking them out. Most of the water treatment process involves removing contaminants–oil, sediment, dissolved solids, etc–from water. However, there are some chemicals added during the purification process. Adding chlorine to the water removes potentially harmful bacteria, and some other purification processes are done with chemicals. For a list of chemicals that are used and what they do, there is a good reference here.
