What do street sweepers do with the stuff they pick up off of the street?

After cleaning the streets, the garbage they collect is sorted through, separating trash and large vegetation from what looks like dirt. The dirt, however, is really comprised of soil, silt, clay, and sand that bind with the oils and hydrocarbon from the cars. Companies remove this mixture from the rest of the trash and vegetation and use it as landfill cover, while the other material is recycled as possible.
