What do sports creams like icy hot and bengay do to the environment?

There have been several reports on such chemical-ridden sports creams causing fatalities from over-usage. Methyl salicylate is the key ingredient in almost all OTC sports creams, and the most potent form of methyl salicylate is oil of wintergreen, a liquid concentrate that comes from wintergreen leaf fermentation. Oil of wintergreen contains 98 percent methyl salicylate, so it’s highly toxic in its pure form. These products end up in landfills and the chemicals eventually seep into the ground, contaminating the soil and quite possibly harming us (and perhaps other animals) through the foods we eat.
