Desalination plants don’t actually generate salt in crystals as you see in grocery stores. Desalination works through reverse osmosis that forces the water through permeable membranes, which separate the salt from water. The byproduct or waste generated are not salt crystals, however; it’s a concentrated salt-water solution called brine. The brine solution is sometimes discharged into the sewer system for treatment or directly back into the ocean.
