The three numbers on potting soil stand for the three major nutrients all plants need: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. The numbers represent percentages of the total package, and can be found on almost any bag, chemical and organic, of potting soil. Gardeners can determine which fertilizer or soil to buy for their plants based off of these three numbers.
The first number indicates the nitrogen content, the second number indicates the phosphorus content and the third is the content of potassium. Depending on the intended use of the soil these numbers must be greatly noted.
