What do landfills do to keep the smell from getting too bad?

Actually, the problem seems to be that landfills DO smell too bad – there are a ton of articles about the problem, but close to none that talk about solutions. In some areas, the smell of landfills is so strong that local residents say they can’t even bear to go outdoors, especially in the heat. One article skeptically discussed a landfill in California that had someone managed to control its smell with something akin to the smell of potpourri, although residents said it still smelled like trash and room freshener. The bottom line is that landfills are bad for the environment not only because they smell bad, but because they are increasing in size, and rapidly.
