Farmers and ranchers are looking at a number of ways to improve their irrigation delivery systems, as well as crop and soil management, to become more efficient water users. Improvements to irrigation scheduling, delivery and management are better matching water supply to crop needs. Some of the most innovative farming systems re-use water to raise two products, such as fish and crops.
Some farms practice water conservation and use watering equipment such as drip irrigation systems and soaker hoses. This equipment reduces the rate of evaporation, reduces water runoff, prevents watering untargeted plants such as weeds, and makes sure that water is being used more efficiently. Some farmers also try and monitor at what time they water their crops, trying to avoid the hottest time of the day for watering where a larger percentage of water is evaporated.
