What do estuaries do for shorelines?

Estuaries are a way of separating rivers and oceans.  Instead of letting rivers freely flow into the ocean, estuaries provide a kind of boundary.  It stops the backflow of ocean water into the rivers and allows for a sort of transition between the two bodies of water.  As far as shorelines go, they are better preserved when estuaries are maintained.
