What do diplomats do and how do I go about becoming one?

A diplomat is one who conducts diplomacy. Diplomacy is the skillful art of international relations and foreign policy. In America the diplomats are part of the US Department of State, now headed by Hillary Clinton. Some posts are like normal jobs, where you apply for that position and get hired. Ambassadors are appointed by the President then approved by the Senate, usually without question. Oftentimes ambassadorial appointments are given out to big political donors/supporters. Other times they are given to individuals in the State Department.

If you want to become a diplomat you should either apply for a job in the State Department, or become a massive political contributor and hope for the best.
