Patagonia is one of the best companies in terms of environmental awareness. On the website, the company outlines its current projects for giving back, protecting open spaces and “using business to inspire solutions to the environmental crisis.”
First, anyone who goes to a Patagonia store can vote in the annual Vocie Your Choice campaign to decide which local environmental group should receive a $5,000 grant. Second, they are currently helping to create a Patagonia National Park in Patagonia, which would be comparable to Yosemite National Park. Thrid, they give out environmental grants to small, grassroots activists. To date, they have given over $35 million. Patagonia is a co-founder of The Conservation Alliance, helping preserve threatened open spaces. Also, since 1985, 1% of its sales go to 1% For The Planet, an alliance that encourages businesses to pledge 1% of net sales to protecting the environment.
Finally, Patagonia has pledged that by spring of 2010, 83% of its products will be recyclabe, with 65% being produced from environmentally friendly materials, and a final ambitious goal of 100% recyclable products by fall 2010.
Patagonia is especially conscientious, though, and has been since it inception. Other companies are far behind but are starting to key into the fact that, as purveyors of outdoor apparel, they have a stake in maintaining the outdoors. Many companies like The North Face are now selling more recyclable or recycled apparel.
The North Face and Polartec launched an Eco Champion program in February 2009. The program will have an extensive process to find one champion who is dedicated to an environmental cause, then donate $15,000 to a cause chosen by the champion, who will also receive a $1,000 gift certificate.
REI has its own line of outdoor clothing and funds nationwide conservation efforts. The company donates millions of dollars per year to support efforts such as cleanup of beaches, habitat restoration, and building of trails.
