There are several types of catfish ranging in size and diet. On the whole, catfish consume smaller fish, bugs, crayfish, mollusks, fish eggs, aquatic plants, minnows, snails, carrion, worms and leeches. Larger catfish will generally eat vegetation, small fish, and insects. Interestingly, catfish mainly hunt for food at night, using their whiskers to help them locate food. Most of their food supply is found at the bottom of rivers, where catfish like to catch their food.
Catfish are predominantly scavengers, meaning they’ll eat whatever they come across. Smaller catfish eat mussels and crayfish and larger species eat frogs or other fish.
