Ants are sometimes called “ecosystem engineers”. Ants are predators of larger animals and play a huge role in the food web. The presence of ants in an area has been found to actually attract a density and diversity of other animals. When ants are present, herbivores and decomposers are often found in greater numbers because ants help keep soil healthy. The nutrients in soil are kept at healthies levels when ants are present building mounds and hunting.
