The dispersant used on the oil spill was supposed to “break” the oil into smaller droplets so that bacteria could more easily degrade it. In addition to being easier to break down, another reason for using the dispersant was that it was supposedly less dangerous to marine life than keeping the slick around. Dispersing the oil would allow currents to take it below the surface. However, scientists do not know for certain whether bacteria can digest oil faster when it’s in droplets. The long term effects of using dispersant are also unknown.
