Squirrels mostly carry nasty little bugs with them like lice, fleas, ticks, and mites. These can get to you, but really only if you’re handling the squirrel (not recommended). There is a threat of parasites and diseases like Salmonella and Lepto (mostly really bad for dogs, get their shots updated if you’re around wildlife with your dog a lot!). This can be transmitted via squirrel poop, and it can get in your house if they’re living in your roof.
There have been some cases of people developing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (mad cow disease) after eating squirrel brains. Squirrel brains are still eaten in some parts of the country.
