It can be called “fill” because it fills up space wherever it goes. In some cases, it is transported to other locations and used to change the landscape of the area. However, it is often simply dumped in a nearby valley. This cuts down on transportation costs, but unfortunately destroys all the plants and wildlife in the area.
It is often called “overburden.”
