What is different between a white tail deer and a mule deer?

While white tailed deer live in Northern America and the Southern parts of Canada, the mule deer lives only in the United States and mostly westward of the Missouri River. Mule deer tend to be slightly larger than white tailed deer.

One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is to look at their backsides.  Is it white?  If so, then it’s a mule deer.  Mule deers have white backsides with a black tip on their tail.  White tailed deers don’t have either of these.

Mule deers usually have a black “mask” on their faces and longer ears than white tailed deers.  More specific differences can be found here.
