BOD stands for biochemical oxygen demand, and measures the amount of oxygen that bacteria will consume while decomposing matter, under aerobic conditions.  COD – chemical oxygen demand – differentiates from BOD in that it does not factor organic consumption (bacteria).  COD measures the TOTAL quantity of oxygen required to oxidize all organic material into CO2 and water.  Water with high BOD levels will steal oxygen away from fish and other organisms that need the oxygen to breathe.
