Same family, different species.  A bison, often called a buffalo is actual a different species as well.

Yaks, “Bos grunniens”, are long haired andnative to Central Asia.  Like buffalo they’re herd animals.

Buffalo, “Bubalus Bubalis”, is native to southern Asia.  Buffalo have shorter hair than Yaks — Wild Water Buffalo are an endangered species in Southeasdt Asia.   There are also Swamp and River buffalo — which are slightly different.

Bison, “Bison Bison”, are also called American Buffalo — and have a rather distinct profile: broad shoulders, large head, shorter horns.  To me they look a little bit like humpbacks.
