Whole wheat grains contain the bran, the germ, and the endosperm of a wheat seed, whereas refined grains contain only the endosperm. Basically, whole wheat contains not only the protein and carbohydrates, but vitamins and minerals as well, whereas refined wheat does not necessarily. The term whole wheat means that whole grains were used, whereas just the word wheat does not.
