What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

All tortoises are technically turtles, but not all turtles could be called tortoises. Turtles tend to live in more aquatic environments, where tortoises dwell on land. That is the main difference between turtles and tortoises.

Another category besides turtle and tortoise is the terrapin. These reptiles live in the water and on land. An example is the Diamondback terrapin. It lives along the United States’ Atlantic Coast, in brackish water. This refers to water that has salt, but a smaller amount than is in the ocean.
