What is the difference between a truffle and a mushroom?

A truffle is a type of mushroom. What we commonly call mushrooms, are the fruiting bodies of fungus. There are thousands of different mushroom species, and truffles refer to the fruiting bodies produced by fungus in the Tuber genus.

While they are both a type of fungus, the main difference between a truffle and a mushroom would be where they grow.  Truffles are underground and very difficult to find as opposed to mushrooms which seem to pop up everywhere.  The most relevant difference might be their price.  Truffles are very rare and therefore very expensive, where as mushrooms are easy to grow and inexpensive.
