What is the difference between snow and hail?

Snowflakes consist of a single or conglomerated ice whereas hail is a ball of ice. When a ice crystal grows in very cold air, a snowflake forms and hail starts as a drop of water on a particle, such as a piece of dirt. The drop is then carried through the drafts and thunderstorms, growing in size as it more droplets freeze to its surface.
