What is the difference between shampoo and conditioner?

Shampoo is designed to strip sebum from your hair (sebum is a protective oil that your hair absorbs for protection). If you don’t wash your hair for a few days, you can feel the sebum buildup because your hair feels thicker and more stiff (not to mention oily).
Shampoo is different from regular soap in that it doesn’t strip the oil as efficiently as regular soap, so it doesn’t make your hair too dry.

Conditioner, on the other hand, are designed to add moisture to hair, in the form of oils that are lighter than sebum. (We want our hair to be moisturized and able to move freely.) Conditioners are generally made out of humectants (for moisturizing), detanglers, glossers (usually silicones), and acidifiers (these components tighten up the hair’s scaly surface and makes it smoother).
