Sand is a type of soil and both are formed by the erosion of rocks. Soil is different from sand though because it contains organic matter such as the remains of plants and animals. The organic material in soil forms a hummus that mixed with the eroded rocks allows for plants to grow. While sand typically has low fertility, in some environments, plants can still grow in sandy soil.
