There are several differences between sand and dirt. Sand basically is a collection of very small rocks, and it contains very little nutrients. It is granular made material made up of fine mineral particles. Dirt on the other hand is a mixture of different soils, ground up rocks and decayed matter containing some nutrients. One key difference between sand and dirt is that plants have more difficulty growing in sand compared to dirt. Deserts with pure sand like in the Sahara will have hardly any plant life compared to that of some american deserts. Many American deserts are made up of sand and good amounts of dry dirt which can support sturdy plants that can survive with small amounts of water.
