What is the difference between a rain barrel and a cistern?

Rain barrels and cisterns are both devices used to catch and store rainwater.  The only thing that really distinguishes the two are their different sizes and shapes.  Rain barrels actually look like barrels and are very large, whereas cisterns are shorter, flatter, and can be found in more elaborate architectural settings such as mosques.
