Groundhogs and prairie dogs both belong to the family Sciuridae (along with squirrels). However, groundhogs are larger than prairie dogs, have larger ears and longer tails, and relatively shorter claws on their forepaws. Although they both are rodents, ground hogs are much bigger than prairie dogs. You can tell by the images I just posted which shows a difference.
