What is the difference between a planet and a star?

A planet is a celestial body that almost always orbits a star.  Planets are also not large enough to cause thermonuclear fusion, a defining feature of stars.

A star is simply a ball of burning gas in the sky. Stars burn through stages until they eventually burn out. The sun, like any other star, will eventually burn out as well though this will take thousands of years. A planet is actually comprised of matter such as rock or other dense substances. Planets are not on fire.
