Petroglyph: pictures or images created on rock surfaces by etching, carving, incising or peking the image into the rock.
Pictograph: an idea, story or ideogram conveyed by using shapes and figures in a drawing to convey one of these concepts. Like cavemen drawing on stone walls.
Petroglyphs are carved into the rock, while pictographs are painted or drawn on the rock face. The word “pictograph” also has a broader meaning. It can describe any picture or symbol that represents a word, idea, or phrase.
